Hi there,

sorry for the sliglt OT. Just wanted to let you know that Devuan
Jessie stable, the fork of Debian without systemd, has just been
released:

https://devuan.org/

The reason why this fact might be interesting to this ML is that it
comes with a minimal-live iso:

https://files.devuan.org/devuan_jessie/minimal-live/

which is a console-only live system with support for accessibility,
made possible also thanks to several people in this list who provided
feedback, comments, and suggestions. Feel free to give it a try, if
you like, and to report any problems.

Hi:

Is the installer accessible as well?

On the official Debian netinst iso one simply press 's' on the boot
promt to start speech.
Speakup is also configured to start automatically on the newly installed system.

I don't like systemd, so Devuan is interesting if installer is working
as on official Debian and that Devuan also contains all packages
included in Debian main, contrib and non-free.

Thanks,

Hi,

the default Devuan installers are the same as Debian's. The Devuan
live images (both minimal-live, which is the "accessible" console
desktop, and desktop-live, that is the full-featured live desktop) can
be installed usinf a simple script, called refractainstaller.

I know that there are a few glitches concerning accessibility on the
Devuan graphical desktop, but I also know that several blind and
visually impaired users have successfully used and installed the
minimal-live image, which has accessible boot and ships with brltty,
yasr, espeak, and espeakup.

Hi,
I got my installation iso from 'installer-iso] area downloading
devuan_jessie_1.0.0_amd64_CD.iso and ran my installation from scratch
including mate-desktop in it. All went through with no trouble. Only
small opstical is while entering the graphical environment, one has to
type in username and password with no speech; when done ORCA kicks in.
Great job,
Pawel

Yes, everything is pretty much as Pawel described. You can type s
<enter> just like you would with debian, and the devuan installer is
accessible.

As far as no speech in the GUI at the login screen, this is because
devuan uses the slim login manager, which isn't accessible. This issue
has been documented at:
<https://git.devuan.org/devuan-infrastructure/Installer_Feedback/issues/3>

I haven't gotten around to migrating this issue to the devuan BTS
yet. The work arounds I mentioned however do still work in the
official devuan jessie release, and provide speech at the lightdm
login screen.

I am sure that you could install the mate desktop.
That comes with Orca I'm guessing.
At the CLI, try:
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop
That is just a guess however.
If you do a WWW search for
CLI installing mate desktop
you might get better answers.
HTH.
