The new Portaudio stable release is here.

That said, I think I found another place where Portaudio's alsa code can
lock up. It only happened to me once, after many weeks of testing the
Portaudio fixes.
I submitted a patch, and it is in Portaudio's git repo.
Unfortunately Portaudio devs were very leary of merging it so close to
release time, so it didn't make it into the release.

What is portaudio?

One of the audio libraries used by espeak.
It's a "portable cross-platform audio I/O library".
